Specializing in design and supply of lighting fixtures for building projects across Singapore, Lumitron Pte. Limited (“Lumitron”) rapid growth for past years particularly in the education and healthcare sectors, where the company has built a strong market presence.
Nihon M&A Center Singapore (‘NMAC’) interviewed Mr. Nicholas Khee, who joined the company in 1995 as a Sales Engineer and later became a shareholder in 2011.
NMAC: Please tell us about the company and its business, including the year of incorporation, business overview, key strengths, growth, and challenges amid market changes.
Nicholas: Lumitron was founded in 1981 by Mr. Francis Ong. I joined the company in 1995 as a Sales Engineer and later became a shareholder and part-owner in 2011. We specialize in design and supply of lighting fixtures for building projects across Singapore. Its competitive strength lies in its balanced market presence across both private and public sector projects, as well as its diversified project portfolio covering construction, interior enhancement, and addition and alteration (A&A) works.
Over the past three to five years, Lumitron has achieved steady organic growth, supported by its diversified business base. A significant portion of this growth has been driven by government sector projects following COVID-19, particularly in the education and healthcare sectors, where the company has built a strong market presence.
While the project sector continues to see constant competition and rising client expectations, drawing on its experience and technical expertise, Lumitron is well positioned to respond to these evolving market demands.

Nicholas: As an SME, we wanted Lumitron to grow on a larger scale and operate more like an MNC. We saw M&A as a way to expand overseas under the umbrella of an established multinational group, while preserving Lumitron’s legacy and extending its presence across the region.
NMAC: How would you describe your impression of the partner company and its president?
Nicholas: my overall impression of the company and its president was positive. I noted that communication between the two parties has been open and constructive, with both sides showing a willingness to listen, understand different perspectives, and work together towards Lumitron’s continuing growth.
NMAC: How did employees react to the acquisition?
Nicholas: When the acquisition was first announced, employees had mixed reactions, which were natural given their concerns about the future. Over time, however, most employees have become more positive, and many now take pride in the fact that Lumitron has been acquired by a Japanese multinational company.
NMAC: What message would you like to share with SME owners considering M&A?
Nicholas: I would encourage SME owners to consider M&A as one possible route to international or regional expansion. Becoming part of an MNC group can also enhance a company’s status and strengthen its brand presence more effectively.
NMAC: What is your outlook for the company following the acquisition?
Nicholas: Looking ahead, I see a bright future for Lumitron and its employees. I believe the company will continue to grow stronger and become an even more prominent player in the project lighting market. I am motivated to contribute further to this next stage of growth and to meet the requirements that come with the M&A process. Lumitron’s current projects have already exceeded its pre-acquisition order book forecast, and, with the support of an MNC parent company, I expect the company to become even more organized and structured.
